March 26, 2013 – Artist and actor Anthony Quinn (1915-2001) spent almost a decade living and working in Bristol, Rhode Island, where the preponderance of his work and collection still resides. The collection consists of thousands of Mr. Quinn’s own sketches, paintings and sculptures as well as hundreds of works of art he acquired in his world travels. It also contains manuscripts, diaries, personal correspondence, films, rare photos, recorded interviews and his personal book collection consisting of more than 9,000 volumes.

Earlier this year, the Anthony Quinn Foundation was awarded a grant from the Rhode Island Council for the Humanities to begin organizing and cataloging the archive in order to make it more manageable for research and scholarly study and available for organized school visits. Eventually the collection will be digitized and available for viewing online. The Rhode Island Council for the Humanities Major Grants program awards funding to projects that inspire and support intellectual curiosity and imagination. In the past two years, the Foundation has hosted numerous cultural organizations and high school groups to visit the studio/workshop and collection of Mr. Quinn. The response has been overwhelmingly positive and demonstrates the need and desire for such personal hands-on experiential learning.

Some comments from educators and students who visited the archive:<br />

“This unique experience provided me with a new lens through which to view the life and work of this extraordinary individual…he arrived in the U.S. as an immigrant, and labored to become a renowned actor and an inspiration for young people to follow their dreams” — Ann Marie Stock, Director of Literary and Cultural Studies at The College of William & Mary

“The visit to (the archive) inspires all to work diligently in the creative realm in order to contribute to the artistic legacy of our planet. Mr. Quinn’s great variety of artistic accomplishments…is truly inspirational. I believe that your foundation is fulfilling a very important need in our society by supporting the teaching of the arts and motivating all artists, especially young artists…and open up their minds and hearts through the arts.” — Margherita Tortora, Senior Lector II, CLAIS Yale MacMillan Center

“…this experience has been a transformative one. Mr. Quinn’s work, passion to create and the energy that seems to exist on the grounds has inspired me to pursue the passions of my life; to search for the extraordinary out of life, rather than accepting the ordinary.” – Dennis Driscoll, Student College Unbound

A critical component of the project is the international significance deriving from Mr. Quinn’s Mexican heritage, his upbringing as a poor immigrant in Los Angeles during a time of extreme prejudice against Mexicans (1920s, 30′s, and 40′s) and his unquestionable international success. That success was predicated on hard work, dedication, and the influence of great artists and pioneers with whom he crossed paths: Frank Lloyd Wright, John Steinbeck, John Barrymore, Charlie Chaplin, Bill Cosby, Spike Lee, and many others. Although he was best known for his work in film, throughout his life he developed an equal significance as an artist across many different media and stayed involved and engaged in many humanitarian causes.

Evan Kinnane, now an 11th grader from Tiverton, RI, is our newest 2011 scholarship recipient to be featured on the blog. Evan is well established in singing, dancing, and acting. He attended the Boston Conservatory Music Theater Dance Intensive this past summer in part with help from the scholarship he received from the foundation. Evan took the time to share his experience and thanks the Anthony Quinn Foundation for giving him this opportunity.

Singing and acting have been an almost daily part of my life since I was 6, and dance was there if I needed to learn a bit for a show, Two years ago I was advised that if I was seriously going to pursue the arts as a career when I got older, which I was, I would need to know how to dance in order to be cast in roles in Musical Theatre and my ultimate dream, Broadway.

Walking into my first dance class in a pair of soccer shorts and t-shirt, without one dance shoe to my name, I never would have thought that I would be as passionate about dance as I am today. Dance has changed my life, my world and my dreams for the better. No matter what anyone says behind my back about me or even to my face about who they perceive me to be, it won’t make me stop dancing. It couldn’t. The feeling I get when I am up on that stage performing for a crowded room, the feeling I get being able to tell a story to them without speaking a word, the feeling of being able to take people on a journey outside the theatre’s walls, even if just for a moment, away from their busy lives and hectic schedules, to hopefully make them forget their troubles, that feeling will always overpower the people who try to take me down. Of course it will never stop the hurt I may feel, but I take that emotion and put it into my dance, I take it and I use it to become a better performer.

This summer I was given the opportunity to solidify my love for dance when I received an Anthony Quinn Scholarship. The Foundation’s constant encouragement helped me begin the search for a program that would challenge me. A few weeks later, I found the Boston Conservatory’s Summer Dance Intensive. The three weeks spent there provided me a countless number of opportunities, both personally and professionally. I took classes in Ballet, Jazz, Voice and Acting on a daily basis along with master classes and guest teachers. I made friends that I know I will have for a lifetime. I gained confidence in myself and for all of these things, I am thankful.

Dancing has brought new goals into my life and made so many of the ones I had more possible to reach. My biggest goal in life is to inspire people. I want to be a role model for the younger generation. I want to show people that dance can be daring and masculine. I want to make a change. I want to move people through dancing, to send a message across to them.

The last, but certainly not least, student in our blog series on our 2011 Anthony Quinn Foundation Scholarship Recipients is Brandon Hou, a violinist and pianist from Norcross, GA who is currently in the 11th grade at the Gwinnett School of Mathematics, Science, and Technology. He will be using his scholarship to attend the Franklin Pond Chamber Music program this summer. Please join us in congratulating Brandon and wishing him the best this summer and in the future as he builds his musical career.

brandon hou

What are your aspirations in your art form and/or career aspirations?

I would love to have a career in music in either performing or teaching. Whether this career aspiration will be realized or not, my goal in music is to take it as far as I can, to reach my own potential. I plan on majoring in music in college.

What do you do for fun? Do you have any interesting or unusual hobbies?

Other than playing in or attending concerts, I love watching movies with friends and playing with my 7-year old snoring pug – he falls asleep as soon as I start practicing! I have also trained in Karate for 7 years. The disciplines needed for both music and karate are very similar.

What is something unique about you that you would like people to know?

Nothing unique, just an average junior worrying about not having enough hours in a day to get all the stuff done. But here is a weird fact about me: I tend to listen more than I watch during movies. I can recall most movie scores in details, but not the movies themselves.

Click here to see Brandon perform Zoltán Kodály’s ”Serenade for 2 Violins and Viola, Op. 12, III. Vivo.” Brandon describes it as “a very interesting and unique chamber trio piece that our chamber group performed several years back.”

The next talented student in our blog series on our 2011 Anthony Quinn Foundation Scholarship Recipients is Gregory LaRosa, a percussionist from Dowingtown, PA who is currently in the 11th grade at Dowingtown West High School. He will be using his scholarship to attend the Boston University Tanglewood Institute: Young Artists Orchestra and Percussion Workshop this summer. Please join us in congratulating Gregory and wishing him the best this summer and in the future as he builds his musical career.

Gregory LaRosa

What are your aspirations in your art form and/or career aspirations?

In addition to continuing my performing career as a versatile percussionist, I plan on devoting my life to one major goal: increasing the education of the fine arts, particularly to underprivileged children by means of hands on learning.

Throughout my entire life, I have been extremely fortunate to have received a tremendous education in the arts by inspiring, world-class professionals. The unfortunate truth is that I am one of very few who can say this. The reality is that the fine arts are exceedingly expensive, and unfortunately and increasingly not seen as a worthy investment. The arts lift one’s mind, body, and soul. They bring joy, inspire hope and represent a perfect antidote for a society too often plagued by drugs, violence, and crime.

I am inspired by the El Sistema system of Venezuela, which creates a sanctuary of security, happiness, and entertainment that allows every under-privileged child to not only learn about the wonders of music, but also discover life-long healthy morals. It is my dream to create an El Sistema system that includes opportunities in all art forms, such as writing, painting, sculpting, acting, film, photography, dance and music. The school will have an overarching goal: to introduce, nurture, and develop an appreciation for the fine arts.

What do you do for fun? Do you have any interesting or unusual hobbies?

I enjoy traveling the globe learning about different cultures. Through my travels I have discovered unique music and art and learned that art is truly a universal language.

What is something unique about you that you would like people to know?

Because of my love for teaching and my mature personality, my friends have given me the nickname “Professor.”

Click here to see Gregory perform a 4-mallet marimba piece composed by Keiko Abe, entitled “Michi.” According to Gregory, “translated from Japanese, ‘Michi’ means ‘enlightened journey.’ Through a variety of tempi and intense dynamic contrasts, listeners experience distinct segments of this journey towards enlightenment.”

Make sure to visit Gregory’s YouTube channel to see more of his performances.

I want to become an Art Therapist, and also teach art in some form.

What do you do for fun? Do you have any interesting or unusual hobbies?

I’m a big reader. Once I have a book that I like, you have to pry it out of my hands. I also enjoy photography along with painting and sketching. Being blessed enough to live five minutes away from the bay, I spend a lot of time down there with a camera, paper, and watercolors.

What is something unique about you that you would like people to know?

I believe in equality. “Treat others as you would like to be treated” is mantra I was raised on and is something I strongly believe in.

The image below is called “Hazel.” Anna says, “I did [it] for Day of the Dead early last October. I created it to honor a woman I was close to who passed away in February of 2011. She loved the piano and music, so I honored that in the piece.”

It would be amazing to have the opportunity to become a professional photographer/printmaker/designer. Since I am also intrigued by art history, becoming a curator or even an independent gallery owner would all be things I would potentially aspire to become.

What do you do for fun? Do you have any interesting or unusual hobbies?

I swim competitively year round for Lobo Aquatic Club as well as for the varsity team at my high school during the winter. I adore yoga as well as the outdoors: cycling, hiking, camping, backpacking, rafting, among others.

What is something unique about you that you would like people to know?

I have a condition called scoliosis; my spine is an “S” shape. I wore a back brace for three years (from 5th-7th grade) and it has significantly influenced some of my ideas in regards to portraiture and the human figure.

The next talented student in our blog series on our 2011 Anthony Quinn Foundation Scholarship Recipients is Jordan Towle, a painter and illustrator from Wakefield, RI who is currently in the 11th grade at South Kingstown High School. She will be using her scholarship to attend the Rhode Island School of Design, Continuing Education, Introduction to Figure Drawing and Painting Studio class this summer. Please join us in congratulating Jordan and wishing her the best this summer and in the future as she builds her art career.

JORDAN TOWLE

What are your aspirations in your art form and/or career aspirations?

Whether I continue art as a career or hobby isn’t really relevent; I make art for myself and if others enjoy it, it’s just serendipity. I’ll continue to make art regardless of what career I go into, because it makes me feel things and changes my perspective on living.

What do you do for fun? Do you have any interesting or unusual hobbies?

I read. I draw and paint. I sing. I write. I think. They aren’t particularly unusual hobbies, but I like to think that the way I go about them is a little unique.

What is something unique about you that you would like people to know?

I really like humor and laughing. Sometimes I can be deadly serious, but you only see that if you’re very close to me. I kind of live teetering on the edge of uncontrollable laughter and crying.

The image below is “Deer Lady,” an acrylic painting on canvas that Jordan created this winter. She describes it as “a woman [depicted] in a somewhart surrealistic way, wearing nothing but a fur coat holding onto a very small deer. The best way to explain it is that it depicts the quiet little corner in everyone’s mind where they suspend their doubts and allow ideas to flow.” For more of Jordan’s art, visit her blog.

The next talented student in our blog series on our 2011 Anthony Quinn Foundation Scholarship Recipients is Wickliffe Simmons, a cellist from Atlanta, GA who is currently in the 11th grade at Holy Innocents’ Episcopal School. He will be using his scholarship to attend Meadowmount School of Music of Society for Strings, Inc. this summer. Please join us in congratulating Wickliffe and wishing him the best this summer and in the future as he builds his music career.

What are your aspirations in your art form and/or career aspirations?

Ideally, I would like to have a great performing career, but I am also interested in teaching music at a conservatory level.

What do you do for fun? Do you have any interesting or unusual hobbies?

Well for me, playing music is the greatest and most enjoyable thing to do. I used to do a lot of acting in school plays and musicals, which I believe helped me grow a lot performing with the cello. But right now, I like watching good movies, talking about world issues, meeting new people, running, going to youth orchestra, festivals/seminars in the summer time, and “thinking about the wonders of life.”

What is something unique about you that you would like people to know?

My uncle told me once that it was remarkable that I have seen so much of the world before my 18th birthday. My travel experiences have shaped the way I look at the world, which I think is quite different in many ways from my peers.

Click here to watch Wickliffe perform the 4th movement of Edward Elgar’s “Cello Concerto in e minor” with John Morrison and the Georgia Philharmonic at the Roswell Cultural Arts Center in January, 2011. Make sure to visit Wickliffe’s YouTube channel to see more of his performances.

The next talented student in our blog series on our 2011 Anthony Quinn Foundation Scholarship Recipients is Amber Romano, a classical ballet dancer from Johnston, RI who is currently home schooled and in the 12th grade.
What are your aspirations in your art form and/or career aspirations?

My whole life I have dreamed of having a job performing with a professional ballet company. My desire is to have the opportunity to connect with audiences and captivate them through the art of dance.

What do you do for fun? Do you have any interesting or unusual hobbies?

If I were not a dancer, I would love to be a professional makeup artist. I also enjoy running, taking road trips, and watching old movies.

What is something unique about you that you would like people to know?

The most important aspect of my life is being a Christian. It is the reason why I dance, and it is my greatest joy to commit all I do to the Lord.

The next talented student in our blog series on our 2011 Anthony Quinn Foundation Scholarship Recipients is Evan Kinnane, a musical theater triple threat (singer, actor, dancer) from Tiverton, RI who is currently home schooled and in the 10th grade.

What are your aspirations in your art form and/or career aspirations?

I want to always be able to inspire people through art. I would love to be able to have a career that surrounds what has been my passion for as long as I can remember. I love the feeling of knowing that I am able to bring the audience on a journey, and I am able to help them escape, even if just for those few hours, from the stress and chaos of the world outside of the theatre walls. I hope to have the same passion, dedication, and drive for the arts as I get older.

What do you do for fun? Do you have any interesting or unusual hobbies?

Even though dancing, acting, and singing are my main focuses in life, I really do enjoy any other type of art and have taken classes in all different forms of them. Painting, pottery, photography, etc. But out of the context of art, I like to surf, travel as much as I can, wherever I can, and even though it’s cliche, it’s true, I like to spend time with friends and family, going to the beach or watching movies. I like to try everything, so going new places and trying new things is always appealing to me.

What is something unique about you that you would like people to know?

That it all happened by accident. When I was just six years old, I followed my sister into an audition to watch and support her as she auditioned for the town community center’s production of “Bye Bye Birdie.” I had no idea that this would be the day and that this would be the room where my passion for the arts would begin. The words “Can I try too?” changed my life forever. Singing the song “Happy Birthday” landed me my very first role as Randolph in that show, and ever since then, I’ve been hooked.

Click here to see Evan as the featured soloist in “Mata Del Anima Sola” with the Rhode Island Senior All State Chorus, recorded at the Veterans Memorial Auditorium in Providence this past March.

The next talented student in our blog series on our 2011 Anthony Quinn Foundation Scholarship Recipients is Tsukumo (Tina) Niwa, an oboist who hails from Fort Lee, NJ and is currently in the 11th grade at Bergen County Academies. She will be using her scholarship to attend the Boston University Tanglewood Institute: Oboe Workshop this summer. Please join us in congratulating Tsukumo and wishing her the best this summer and in the future as she builds her musical career.

Tsukumo (Tina) Niwa

What are your aspirations in your art form and/or career aspirations?

In the future, I would like to become a “musician.” A true musician, I believe, is someone who wholly understands and appreciates the art of music. Of course, I wish to play the oboe and improve my performance skills as long as I can. Expertise on one’s instrument is the foremost quality of a musician, but knowing the background of music and having a great personality are equally as important. My utmost respect goes to Akira Miyagawa, whom I idolize as a musician. He is a very skilled pianist, conductor, and composer – yet, what makes him truly exemplary is the depth of his knowledge in all aspects of music and culture, and his willingness to share it with everyone. Through my efforts, I strive to become this ideal, true musician that I imagine, as I consistently stay hungry for more musical knowledge.

What do you do for fun? Do you have any interesting or unusual hobbies?

I truly love listening to classical music in my spare time. One of my favorite things to do at home is to blast out some massive and dramatic orchestral pieces, such as Mahler or Tchaikovsky symphonies, when no one else is home. In school, I often visit the band room, pick up random instruments, and start playing them. I have “jammed” on French horn, trombone, bassoon, alto sax, bass, tuba, and even timpani – although people around me do not enjoy my horrible and tuneless playing, I have fun!

What is something unique about you that you would like people to know?

Although my main interest is in music, I extend my artistic interest in other forms of art, too. I have taken classes in filmmaking, acting, photography, art history, and stagecraft. My school has “academies,” in which students get to focus on one area of study while taking all academic courses at honors or AP/IB level. I am in the Academy for Visual and Performing Arts, with concentration in music – I take some music-related courses, such as AP Music Theory, MIDI Workshop, Music and Society, Musicianship, and Class Piano, all of which I truly enjoy.

Click here to hear Tsukumo playing Haydn’s “Oboe Concerto in C,” recorded in November 2011. For more of Tsukumo’s recordings, visit her YouTube channel.

One of the greatest rewards of performance is seeing in real time how the audience reacts to the music you are playing. Sometimes their faces show full of joy, with their eyes twinkling. When you realize that they are truly enjoying your performance, your heart is filled with happiness. On the day I first played in front of an audience I recognized a great deal of happiness in their faces. Since that day my desire has been to become a professional cellist and to share my love of music with many other people.

I have recently become keenly interested in teaching. I enjoy attending master classes very much. They are very informative, even if I am not performing in them. Just by observing others perform in master classes, you can learn so much. Also, when someone takes your piece of advice, even a small one, and shows some improvement, you find it is worthwhile. In addition to performing worldwide in hopes of inspiring people and giving them joy, I now also wish to teach master classes so that people can improve their performance with things I have learned.

What do you do for fun? Do you have any interesting or unusual hobbies?

Since I was very little, drawing has always been one of my favorite hobbies. Although I may not be that good at it, it stuck, and now, on special occasions I get some paints out and brew something up.

I also love to write, and when I have some kind of thought, I make sure to note it down somewhere. I am currently writing in three different genres: a pure fiction, a historical fiction, and my own private story–my life. When I become older and better at writing, I hope that with my diary that I have been keeping track of for years, I can create a novel of my life in the future.

What is something unique about you that you would like people to know?

I actually enjoy knitting. I try to do it whenever there is a little down time. I work with socks, leg-warmers, and scarves. Although kids my age show little or no interest in knitting, saying it is “Grandma-like” (I get teased a lot), I like knitting because it is to me one of the best ways to relax my fingers and put my mind at ease. I especially am fond of knitting for my favorite friends, because I love seeing their happy and surprised expressions when they receive a present from me. There is nothing better than a gift with your love knitted in every stitch!

We recently announced our 2011 Anthony Quinn Foundation Scholarship Recipients and now we’re excited to help you get to know this talented group of students a little better. The first of these is Megan Lee, a pianist from Hudson, OH who is in the 9th grade at Huson High School. She will be using her scholarship to attend the Pre-College Division of the Cleveland Institute of Music: Summer Sonata Program. Please join us in congratulating Megan and wishing her the best this summer and in the future as she continues her musical path.

Megan Lee

What are your aspirations in your art form and/or career aspirations?

Though it is often hectic to juggle numerous lessons, practicing, recitals, competitions, and concerts, I feel blessed to have music in my life. Another interest of mine has always been science and biology. I would like to double major in music and science when I go to college. With the technology today, I have always seen myself working in a lab, finding innovative discoveries to help the people of the world. Regardless of what does happen, though, music will hold a special and irreplaceable place in my heart forever.

What do you do for fun? Do you have any interesting or unusual hobbies?

I love capturing memories and the beauty of nature with my camera; photography allows me to express the appreciation I have for the world around me. I am truly thankful for the unconditional love and support my family has always given me; I treasure any free time I am able to spend with them.

What is something unique about you that you would like people to know?

I have an infectious, embarrassingly loud laugh that seems to explode from nowhere. Also, I am ambidextrous (which comes in handy for piano).

“All children in America should be able to access the best schools possible. We have a moral and societal obligation to give our children the opportunity to succeed in school, at work, and in life. We cannot meet that obligation unless parents are empowered to select the best schools of their children.” – Dr. Bill Cosby

Last week marked National School Choice Week in the U.S., a week dedicated to drawing attention to the growing School Choice movement in which parents are given the opportunity to choose the school their children attend and have that education subsidized in part by their tax dollars. Events were held across the country, and notable figures such as Dr. Bill Cosby (a good friend of the Anthony Quinn Foundation) and MSNBC political and legal analyst Michelle Bernard lent their voices and support to the cause.

Already enacted in 19 states, the School Choice program provides parents with the means to send their child(ren) to the school that best fits the child(ren)’s unique needs, rather than the school they can best afford or the school that their tax dollars will pay for. This allows children to attend private school, a charter school, a public school outside their district, or to be home schooled or attend virtual or online schooling. School Choice is made possible through school vouchers, tax-credit scholarship programs, and personal tax credits and deductions.

Several different school voucher programs exist, each with different rules and guidelines for eligibility. Households generally need to meet certain criteria in order to receive a voucher. Once issued, these vouchers allow parents to use all or part of the tax funding set aside for their child(ren)’s education for the school of their choice.

Voucher programs are divided into several categories, including:

Universal Voucher Programs: All children are eligible to receive vouchers (such as in Sweden)

Means-Tested Voucher Programs: Vouchers are awarded on the basis of financial need, where families whose total household income falls below a defined number are eligible.

Failing Schools, Failing Students Voucher Programs: Children who are attending failing public schools, or who are themselves performing poorly or failing in school, are given vouchers to attend a school that their parents determine will better suit their learning needs.

Special Needs Voucher Programs: These are issued to children with documented learning disabilities or educational needs, or children who have Individualized Educational Plans (IEPs), such as children on the Autism spectrum. This allows these children to attend a school that is better-equipped to handle their unique educational, psychological, and social needs.

Pre-Kindergarten Voucher Programs: Children attending pre-K programs are eligible.

Town Tuitioning Programs: Vouchers are offered to children whose communities do not have public schools at their grade level. Usually the parents are allowed to pick the school the children will attend, but in some cases, this decision is instead made by the town.

If a family does not qualify for vouchers, then there are some other options available to them, including:

Open Enrollment: Some states now allow parents to enroll their child(ren) in the public school of their choosing, regardless of its geographic location.

Tax-credit Scholarship Programs: Students can apply for scholarships created by individuals and corporations that provide for an education at a specific private institution. The scholarship sponsors receive a tax credit for their donation, hence the name.

Personal Tax Credits and Deductions: A tax credit or deduction is provided to households for approved educational expenses, which can include private school tuition, books, supplies, tutors, and even transportation. This helps parents recoup the cost of their child(ren)’s education. These credits and deductions may be restricted by income level, however, or may restrict the total amount that can be claimed.

The Anthony Quinn Foundation has chosen to support School Choice and National School Choice Week because we believe it can play a key role in allowing gifted young students to get the best education possible, both in the arts and in their general studies. With the arts becoming less prevalent in our public schools, School Choice gives children with an interest in the arts the option to attend a school that has a solid arts program, a program that will enrich and nurture them both as artists and academics. It enables underprivileged children to attend a school where they will be exposed to the arts and gives them a new outlet for their energy and emotions, keeping them off the streets and in the classrooms. It gives so many needy and deserving children a new lease on life and helps them to realize their full potential, unencumbered by financial restraints. It also encourages schools to become more competitive and really raise the bar in terms of the programs and education they provide. Most of all, it allows the children who genuinely want to learn do just that – learn – and to do it in the manner best suited to them.

Most people know Anthony Quinn the Actor, who commanded the screen in “Zorba the Greek,” “Lawrence of Arabia,” “Viva Zapata!,” “Lust for Life,” and “La Strada,” just to name a few. He has over 160 performance titles to his name, not to mention numerous awards and a star on the Walk of Fame.

Who many people don’t know, however, is Anthony Quinn the Artist, a prolific and passionate sculptor, painter, and drafter. Even the most cursory glance at his works will attest that they came from his heart and his soul; there is a strength and fervor in each of his pieces that attests to the fire that burned within its creator. Each material was carefully selected and meticulously manipulated until it reflected the emotions that inspired it. Even the pieces that remain unfinished radiate his essence; he put everything he had into his art, left it all out on the table, and those who get to see his many works are the better for it.

In upcoming months, we will be featuring some of Anthony Quinn’s works as chosen by those closest to him, and we thought who better to start with than his youngest children, Ryan and Antonia?

Here is what they have to say, in their own words, on their favorite works of their father’s.

Ryan

My favorite sculpture of my father’s is called “Destroyed But Not Defeated.” I have always found the title to be so inspiring. I believe that it means no matter how much your enemy tries to hurt you or destroy you, you should never concede defeat. As well as my fascination with the title, the sculpture itself also has sentimental value to me because it reminds me of my father’s strength and determination. I love the roughness it has on the edges and the smooth feeling on the head. Whenever I see it I run my hands up and down the sculpture to get the textural feeling of it.

I find all of my father’s pieces to have this sort of feeling, so that literally touching them enhances or amplifies the metaphorical or sentimental meaning my father wanted to convey when he was creating them.

Years ago, we had “Destroyed But Not Defeated” out in our front yard. I remember it covered with snow and my friends and I throwing snowballs at each other while using the sculpture as a shield. I always felt protected by it.

Antonia

My favorite work of my father’s [would be] the drawings he created of me as a child. With so many amazing works, it is very hard to choose just one thing to be my favorite; I love watching his movies as well as seeing his artwork every day in our house, but there is something about how personal these drawings are that makes them my favorite.

I have the drawings hung over my bed at home because I think it is amazingly emotional to see a portrait of myself as a child through my dad’s eyes every day. I only discovered the drawings a couple of years ago, but I imagine they were very special to him as well.

The drawings are just sketches of me as a baby, [but] I think they are wonderful because they capture my personality in such an artistic and abstract way that only my dad could have created.

This past August, the Anthony Quinn Foundation hosted Drs. Bill and Camille Cosby at a special Evening with the Stars fundraiser for the Foundation’s scholarship program. Dr. Bill Cosby became a lifelong friend of Anthony Quinn’s after they met in the 1960s and bonded over their shared love of football. Prior to the fundraiser, we spoke to Dr. Cosby about his involvement with the arts, the Foundation, and his relationship with Anthony Quinn. We are pleased to bring you that interview now, and hope you will find Dr. Cosby’s words as inspiring as we do.

Anthony Quinn Foundation: One of the Anthony Quinn Foundation’s primary missions is to promote arts education and provide scholarships to deserving young artists. How did you get your start in the arts? Did you always know that comedy and acting was what you wanted to do?

Bill Cosby: To answer that question, a two part question, [I] didn’t always know. [I] did not want to be a painter, sculptor or to draw cartoons. [I] did not consider being on the radio as a comedian as an art form. It still isn’t an art form. Being a serious actor in Broadway musicals, serious drama, comedy, and writing requires study. You get there by being in the arts as an actor.

I had no financial help until I went into a club and got paid … The oddest situation comes about when people want to cut the arts because not everyone agrees with what is important. So the disagreements happen … The challenges of whether something appears to be anti-American in song, spoken words, filmmaking, art, so the cuts become political. When cuts are made — without entertainment — where are [kids] going to go on the weekend, what are they going to do in the evening to be entertained? What will children who cannot afford equipment or lessons do?

This Foundation started to honor a man who came up, not through the ranks, [not with] the professional schooling; everything done was without the classic classroom in the school. Tony Quinn’s life has always been hands-on in terms of the arts. He has been his own student and his own teacher. He didn’t want to do a traditional thing. He was broke. His ability was to go on [about] his life but not be afraid to do things that he was curious about and loved to do.

The Foundation is a natural way to raise funding to help those young Tony Quinns, male and female, that want to be whatever is natural to them. They want to learn and study to prepare for the next step. This is what this Foundation is about. We need to bring attention to Foundation and what its help is doing.

AQF: You are well known for your charitable involvement, and even received the Bob Hope Humanitarian Award and the prestigious Presidential Medal of Freedom. What inspires you to give back in this manner?

BC: Forget [my] awards. Tony was monetarily poor, but culturally rich, and wanted to discover what he enjoyed. He was a successful artist. He wanted to teach. He taught when he spoke. He always had encouragement for others, passion, and respect of humans. He even looked at boxing as an art form.

“It is up to the human being to become
what ever they want to become.”

For me it was similar. My life was lower economic. But my life was opposite Tony’s. I listened to the comedy because I laughed. I didn’t think to go to Hollywood. I didn’t realize anything about myself until I was put into a position that I had to do things; all of a sudden I had an epiphany to get out of things that I shouldn’t be doing. If I didn’t get an education, credentials, by earning them, then I would be in a position of doing things like scrubbing floors, doing things with my hands and my body with low, low pay. There is nothing wrong with these jobs if you work yourself up. That is when I recognized the need …an epiphany…oh, now I get it. The answer to the question, “Why do I need this?”

AQF: When did the epiphany come?

BC: In the Navy, in Bootcamp. I was19 years old. It came at 0430 hours. Waking up, getting out of that bed, realizing that there had to be thousands of boys who are growing and going to public schools and thinking [the way I thought] about life. [I realized] I wanted to become a school teacher to stop it.

AQF: So you went to Temple to be a teacher?

BC: I went to Temple University to be a teacher, and to study communications. But let’s stay talking about the Foundation and what gives them a chance to hammer away at cuts, cuts, cuts.

Every year I play at the Playboy Jazz Festival at the Hollywood Bowl. There is always a high school winning band to play jazz. Next day, another high school winner plays. What happens if cuts take away the conductors and leaders of these orchestra in the schools? The cuts may come so that teachers are not being paid, the instruments are no longer there, the kids can’t go from sports to lessons, can’t afford it any more. The kids have to have to music, written and to buy. Sounds systems. If a kid wants to play the violin, and there are only two violins, and he is very talented but his parents can’t afford it, he needs a foundation like the Anthony Quinn Foundation to stipend or pick up the whole thing. He may never get to Carnegie hall, but he may be playing in the symphony Houston, Chicago, or Philadelphia.

It’s very important that while the government is trying to figure out what is tasteful and what ought to be in the eyes and ears of the American public, this Foundation can afford to make it possible for [students] to continue their [arts] training.

AQF: What advice do you have for aspiring young artists and performers?very important that while the government is trying to figure out what is tasteful and what ought to be in the eyes and ears of the American public, this Foundation can make it possible for Mary White to continue her classical guitar training.

BC: Pierre Bernard said that after he graduated from art school it took him 16-17 years to find himself. I think one of the most difficult things is for any performer, any artist, to not to let the negative of learning the technical circumvent the talent.

One has to work and work and work and make decisions in art without being afraid of mistakes. And certainly I think that the most difficult thing in art is to judge the critiques because one can make terrible mistakes in thinking that the critic and the negative should be listened to, or [to let] one’s feelings after being rejected change oneself, or [make you] want to become more liked. It is difficult to believe in your own work when you get negative feedback. It is not that horrible that you aren’t discovered. Jack Lemmon took piano lessons. Not everyone is going to Carnegie Hall.

To be given the opportunity, whether you wind up Jack Lemmon or at the saloon singing, whether you play by yourself or you’re doings design on T-shirts — It is up to the human being to become what ever they want to become.

The Anthony Quinn Foundation would like to thank to Dr. Bill Cosby for his time and support of the Foundation and its mission.

The representational motifs central to Quinn’s creative verb without question have a pathos with the modernist traditions of the 20th century. The exhibition has culled together a number of significant two and three dimensional pieces that have not been widely viewed by the public. These seamlessly assembled works will also serve as an opportunity for the ongoing formal aesthetic and scholarly examination of the visceral yet exacting craftsmanship founded in his compositions. This material could be said to be inspired by Quinn’s fascination with the desert but the real focus is an artist compelled to find his voice while searching for nuance in an economy of gestural exploration that being the palette for a new art.

Institut Lumiere payed tribute to creative force Anthony Quinn (1915-2001) through the construction of a special exhibition space to showcase photographs of the actor on set in Crete while filming Zorba the Greek in 1964. The photographs were taken by Sam Shaw (1912-1999) who shot the biggest stars in Hollywood (Audrey Hepburn, Humphrey Bogart, Elizabeth Taylor, and Marilyn Monroe). The stolen moments on the set show Quinn at work, posing, or between takes. In both color and black and white and often photographed closely, one discovers Quinn’s face carved in moments of relaxation or concentration, where the party life mingles with the film.

The exhibition of rare photographs released both the mood of the film and that of the actor and was organized by the Shaw Family Archives.

LYON, France – A sculpture by the late actor Anthony Quinn has been unveiled at INTERPOL’s General Secretariat headquarters in Lyon. The bronze work of art, entitled ‘Mercedes Woman’ and created by the Mexican-American actor in 1991, has been lent to the world police body by the Anthony Quinn Foundation.

Paying tribute to Anthony Quinn at the unveiling of the sculpture, Secretary General Ronald K. Noble said that the work of art was ‘both inspiring and fitting to the work of INTERPOL’ in its message of universality and unbounded versatility, paying no heed to linguistic, cultural, or religious differences.

The President of the Anthony Quinn Foundation, Katherine Quinn, said she was ‘proud to have the sculpture in such a global environment’ since her late husband had been ‘a global citizen’, as she outlined the role of the arts, education and creative thinking in bringing cultures together. In attendance was Benjamin Bergenholtz, Executive Director of Anthony Quinn Foundation, Foundation Board Members Erich G. Rhynhart and Sandra van den Broek, and Foundation friends.

‘Mercedes Woman’ was stolen in December 2006 but recovered by Rhode Island police within a fortnight.
